10 Things You Need to Know About Turbulence PLUS video of scary tubulence:

. 1. Turbulence-related injuries do happen—but rarely. The Federal Aviation Administration says there are between 30 and 60 cases of turbulence-related injuries each year. Two-thirds of that number are flight attendants (mostly because they're the ones who might not be seatbelted in when the bumps hit), which means that only 20 passengers—out of the 800 million who fly each year in the United States—are injured due to turbulence.
2. Generally, turbulence is quite harmless. Turbulence is essentially just a "rough patch" caused by wind, due to thunderstorms, the jet stream, proximity to mountains, and other factors, and thus is quite common on any flight.

what everyone is asking about AirAsia?

1. What happened exactly?
Some basic facts are known about Flight 8501's journey before it lost contact with air traffic control.
  • The Airbus A320-200 took off from the Indonesian city of Surabaya at 5:36 a.m. local time Sunday with 155 passengers and 7 crew members on board. Its destination was Singapore, a journey that usually takes a little over two hours.
  • At 6:12 a.m., one of the pilots asked air traffic control permission to turn and climb to a higher altitude to try avoid bad weather, according to Indonesian officials.
  • Minutes later, the plane disappeared from air traffic control's radar.
  • At 7:55 a.m., Flight 8501 was officially declared missing. Its last known position was over the Java Sea, between the islands of Belitung and Borneo.

AirAsia Not Alone: What is it with Java Sea and missing planes?

The Indonesian Air Force scans the horizon searching for signs of AirAsia Flight QZ8501. (Associated Press)

With oil slicks spotted but no debris found, the search for AirAsia flight QZ8501 will continue tomorrow, adding new areas south of Belitung Island in the Java Sea, where many believe the plane rests at the bottom of the ocean.

If this shallow sea is indeed the final resting place of the 162 souls onboard, they will not be alone. Nestled between the Indonesian islands of Kalimantan (to the north), Java (to the south), Sumatra (to the west), and Sulawesi (to the east), the Java Sea is already a graveyard of sorts. Many have lost their lives in the tropical waters.

The War Is Over, Afghanistan Tourism Is on the Rise — See Bamiyan, the Country's Best Hidden Gem

One of the coolest things about travel is wandering into a place that time seems to have truly forgotten. These days, locations like that are few and far between — but they still exist. One of the most special to me is Bamiyan, Afghanistan. I went there earlier this year for the Afghan Ski Challenge. At first, I was very nervous. After all, it’s Afghanistan: It’s war-torn and

Skimpy outfits and an even skimpier excuse. (Photo: Vietjet Air)

It was bad enough that VietJet did a photo shoot that revived that unfortunate sexy-flight-attendant trope, which we thought had gone out with Pan Am. What really got us was that once the airline started getting called out for its sexist campaign, it tried to claim that the photos were just a “trial shoot” for a proposed campaign — an undress rehearsal? — that, oh my gosh, one of their models accidentally posted on her popular Facebook page.

5 festivals you won't want to miss

Carnival of Brazil
This annual festival marks the beginning of Lent, the forty-day period before Christmas. The festival has its roots in the pagan festival of Saturnalia. While the carnival is primarily Catholic in nature, the entire world watches this spectacle of pomp, colours, music and rhythm, as the performers, especially the exotic samba dancers and revellers take to the streets and show their best moves, clad in body-paint, glitter, feathers, and little else. Ironically, the parade’s excesses represent an ‘act of farewell to the pleasures of the flesh’ before Lent during which, Christians are supposed to abstain from all acts of bodily pleasures.

The wonder moment of LOVE and FLIGHT

Romance and flying rarely go together anymore, unless you fall in love 35,000 feet above ground and get engaged in-flight.Alexandra Williams and Arvin Shandiz met on a Delta Air Lines shuttle from New York to Chicago in 2010, CNN affiliate WGN reported.
"I was enamored with her from day one and I was like, I'm going to spend the rest of my life with her," Shandiz told the station.
"I would joke with her and tell her that when we get engaged, it'll happen on a Delta flight."
And that's exactly what happened.
On Friday, in the middle of a flight from Chicago's O'Hare International to New York's LaGuardia Airport, Shandiz suddenly addressed a visibly shocked Williams over the plane's intercom (with the airline's permission) as other passengers looked on.

Is it safe to use your phone in flight

It’s hard turning off your phone on the plane. I don’t know if its the pull of Temple Run, or just the fact that the little kid inside you doesn’t want to be told what to do, but I just can’t seem to do it. College Humor delves into the subject with one of the best explanations I’ve ever heard. You can talk to me about science until my face is blue and I still won’t get anything you said. Talk about magic though and you’ve got my undivided attention.
Since 1991, the Federal Communications Commission has maintained a ban on the use of cell phone on planes, arguing that cellular signals may interfere with aircraft's' electronic equipment. However, recent developments have left the status of in-flight calls up in the air.
The FCC says that safety is the reason for the ban on cell phone usage.

A doctor and nurse who happened to be on the same flight assisted the mother. They were able to successfully deliver the child and provide care until the aircraft landed at LAX.

Losing my Virginity

Richard Branson is a flamboyant British entrepreneur with a seemingly insatiable appetite for starting new businesses. His internationally recognized brand "Virgin" is splashed across everything from credit cards, to airlines and music "megastores". Branson is continuously seeking new business opportunities and loves a good challenge, especially when he enters a market that is dominated by a few major players.

Richard Branson was born on July 18, 1950. His entrepreneurial ways began early when he was publishing a student magazine at just 16 years. Branson did not go on to graduate school but in 1970 the now famous Virgin brand had its beginnings in the form of a discount records mail order venture that he and his friend Nik Powell worked on.

Top 10 Safety tips for children traveling alone

Many airlines, including all of the major US airlines, allow children as young as five to travel alone. In addition to the usual risks that come with flying, there are additional risks that are associated with children flying alone. Many of these risks can be overcome by using common sense and taking a few basic precautions. The following tips will help your child, as well those responsible your the child, to deal with many of the problems that he or she may face.
  1. Consider the maturity of the child: While airlines allow children as young as five to travel unaccompanied, younger children may not be ready or willing to be in the presence of strangers for several hours, and may not be able to handle unusual situations that they may encounter. AirSafe.com makes the following recommendation: if your child is old enough to travel alone on public transportation, is able to spend time away from family in an organized setting like an overnight trip with a youth group, then that child is probably old enough to travel unaccompanied on a flight that includes a change of planes. Nonstop flights would be appropriate for children with less maturity.

tips to overcome flight phobia

Does the idea of flying cause you to break out in a cold sweat? You aren't alone. More than 25 million Americans suffer from some form of flight anxiety, making aerophobia (fear of flying) the second biggest fear in the U.S. after public speaking. If you do fall in this category, you've probably had friends and family remind you numerous times that flying is the safest mode of transportation. While that's very true—your chances of dying in a plane crash are about one in 10 million compared with a one-in-272 chance of dying in a car crash—that's not always enough to quell the jitters.

Is it safe to fly during pregnancy?

Generally, commercial air travel during pregnancy is considered safe for women who have healthy pregnancies. Still, if you're pregnant, it's best to check with your health care provider before you fly. Your health care provider might caution against air travel if your pregnancy is considered high risk or you're at risk of preterm labour. Similarly, your health care provider might restrict travel of any type after 36 weeks of pregnancy.
